چکیده

The 1-searcher is a mobile guard whose visibility is limited to a ray emanating from his position, where the direction of the ray can be changed continuously with bounded angular rotation speed. Given a polygonal region P with a specified boundary point d, is it possible for a 1-searcher to eventually see a mobile intruder that is arbitrarily faster than the searcher within P, before the intruder reaches d? We decide this question in O(n logn)-time for an n-sided polygon. Our main result is a simple characterization of the class of polygons (with a boundary point d) that admits such a search strategy. We also present a simple O(n)-time algorithm for constructing a search schedule, if one exists. Finally, we compare the search capability of a 1-searcher with that of two guards.

A unified and efficient solution to the room search problem

We study the problem of searching for a mobile intruder in a polygonal region P with a door d (called a room) by a mobile searcher. The objective is to decide whether there exists a search schedule for the searcher to detect the intruder without allowing him to exit P through d, no matter how fast he moves, and if so, generate a search schedule. A searcher is called the k-searcher if he holds k...

Optimal Schedules for 2-guard Room Search

We consider the problem of searching a polygonal room with two guards starting at a specified door point. While maintaining mutual visibility and without crossing the door, the guards must move along the boundary of the room and eventually meet again. We give polynomial time algorithms for finding a search schedule that minimizes the total distance travelled by the guards and for minimizing the...

Simple Characterization of Polygons Searchable by 1-Searcher (Revised)

Suppose intruders are in a dark polygonal room and they can move arbitrarily fast, trying to avoid detection. A boundary 1-searcher can move along the polygon boundary, equipped with a flash light that she can direct in any direction. A polygon is searchable if there is a schedule for the searcher in order to detect the intruders no matter how they move. We identify three simple forbidden patte...

Searching for mobile intruders in circular corridors by two 1-searchers

We consider the problem of searching for a mobile intruder in a circular corridor by three mobile searchers, who hold one flashlight, a variation of the 1-searcher problem in a circular corridor. A circular corridor is a polygon with one polygonal hole such that its outer and inner boundaries are mutually weakly visible. The 1-searcher has a flashlight and can see only along the ray of the flas...
